Control of

TEMPERATURE HUMIDITY ATMOSPHERE

Extended studies of biological specimens often require an environment normally achieved only in large, laboratory incubator systems. For applications in microbiology, it is necessary to keep the specimens under controlled conditions and still provide optically clear paths for microscope viewing.

Until the introduction of our INC-2000 Incubator System for microscopy, the only means of solving the problem of sample degradation was to surround the entire microscope system with a large, plastic chamber and introduce large quantities of a gas mixture conditioned to be at high humidity. This approach has several disadvantages and limitations. Access to the microscope and specimen is restricted, a large amount of pure and pre-mixed gas is consumed, and thermal equilibrium is difficult to realize.

The INC-2000 Incubator System is a miniature chamber that sits on the stage of any upright or inverted microscope and duplicates the atmospheric conditions of high quality laboratory full size incubators. Miniscule amounts of a pre-mixed gas is required, humidity is kept at nearly 100% RH and temperature control is stable to 0.1 degree C.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The INC-2000 Incubator System consists of the following:

  • Integrated HUMIDIFYING CHAMBER and INCUBATOR CHAMBER
  • Precision Temperature Controller
  • Gas Flow Controller and Window Temperature Controller
  • Mount for microscope stage (specify at time of order)

The “control” gas (e.g. 5% CO2 in air) is introduced into the Humidifying Chamber which is filled with water. The gas becomes saturated and continuously bleeds slowly into the Incubator Chamber. Both chambers are at the same temperature (set by the Temperature Controller). An electrically heated thin glass window on the top of the Incubator Chamber is kept at a temperature slightly above the Chamber temperature to prevent fogging or condensation assuring clear viewing or illumination of the specimen.

The Incubator Chamber is designed to accept a variety of standard specimen holders including 35mm to 60mm petri dishes, 25 X 75mm microscope slides and Nunc multi-well cover glass chambers.
